The magic mirror
Alex was a normal, 18 year old, high school student, besides the fact, that he had close to none friends. He was known as a loner and people stayed away from him. On top of that he was bullied by some of the older boys. Normally he spent his free time in the library, either reading a book or studying for college. One day, while he was learning for a history test, three bullies entered the library and walked over to him. “Hey bookworm!” one of them called. Alex groaned inwardly and he felt a pang of fear inside of him. “You know, sitting inside the whole day isn’t good for you.” The first bully said. “Yeah!” One of the other two confirmed. “You should do some sports. That’s good for your health.” The last one added. Alex sighed and closed the book that he was reading. “What do you want?” He asked, his voice trembling a little. “Oh, we just want to help you with your physical training.” The first bully said and stepped next to Alex. He grabbed his shirt and lifted him one foot of the ground. “Look, that’s how you learn to fly.” He mocked Alex and threw him into a nearby bookcase. Alex crashed into it and an avalanche of books spilled over him, rendering him unconscious. The bullies laughed. “I have an idea.” One of them said “Let’s take him over to the broom closet and hide him in there.” “Yes!” his two friends said. One of them picked up Alex and carried him to the closet, while the other two stowed the books back in the bookcase. Alex was thrown into the closet and one of the bullies threw his bag after him. While they had been cleaning up the pile of books, nobody had noticed that a small and old looking book had slipped into the bag.
When Alex woke up it was dark and he had a big headache. His whole body hurt and he groaned. He tried to find his bag in the dark, and when he had found it Alex took out the flashlight. When he looked through his stuff, to see, if the bullies had stolen something, he noticed an old book in his bag. Curiously he flipped it open at a random page.
Escape reality with the magic mirror the headline read.
Below it there was a sketch of an old mirror with strange symbols on it and a map. Somehow the map seemed familiar to Alex, but he couldn’t recall where he had seen it before. ‘This book looks very old. Nobody must’ve touched it for a long time. He looked around in the closet. ‘Well, at least they couldn’t lock the door.’ He thought. Once outside the closet he walked to the exit, only to find it closed. ‘Damn, so late already? Now I’m stuck here for the rest of the night.’ He went to the librarian’s desk and searched for a plan of the library. When he found one he cursed ‘Great. Of course this building has no other exit. Now I’m really stuck here.’ Remembering the book he had found he thought ‘Well, might as well read it. I have time enough.’ He sat down and flipped the book open at the page with the mirror. When he looked at the map on the right page again he blinked his eyes in surprise. He rose and looked at the plan of the library again.
‘They are the same.’ He thought ‘Maybe there is really a secret hidden here.’ Alex looked at the book again and started to follow the directions given in it. After three minutes he stood in a dead end. ‘Great. A dead end. So it was just a story book and somebody had the funny idea to use the same map for the building and the book.’ He thought sarcastically. He looked at the book again and was about to throw it in a corner, when he noticed a small note below the map.
Press the knothole in the back of shelf number seven the note said.
He searched the bookcase in front of him and, when he had found the knothole, he pressed it. A loud cracking noise could be heard. The bookcase trembled and retreated into the wall, leaving a big black hole behind.
Alex stepped closer and shone through it with his flashlight. Behind the hole there was a small and empty room. No, not entirely empty. In the far back he could see an odd shape. He stepped into the room and walked over to it. Halfway through the room, he recognized the shape as a mirror and when he stood in front of it, he saw that it was the mirror from the book. ‘What the hell?’ Alex thought. ‘Why can’t I see myself in this mirror? Is this a joke?’ Suddenly the symbols on the mirror frame started to glow and a figure appeared in the mirror. “Who are you?” Alex asked. ‘Why did I do that?’ he wondered ‘It’s not like mirrors can talk or so.’ The figure giggled and asked “Isn’t that obvious?” Alex jumped back in surprise. “You can talk?” he asked. The figure looked at him. “Of course I can talk. What did you think?” “Well, this is a mirror, so I thought…” “Oh, yes, of course. This is all your imagination. I’m not real. You’re dreaming” The figure said sarcastically. “I’m sorry” Alex said “I apologize, if I have offended you. But really, who are you?” “Take a closer look and you should know the answer.” The figure said. Alex pointed his flashlight at the mirror and nearly dropped it from surprise.
The figure was a girl, but not just any girl. She wore the same clothes as he. Of course hers were a few sizes smaller. Her features were the same as his and she even had the same bag as he. “Are you … Are you me?” he asked. The girl smiled “Finally we are getting somewhere.” “But, you are a girl!” Alex said. “And you? Are you sure that you are a boy?” she asked innocently “Deep inside your soul you are actually a girl. And you know that. Here, let me show you.” She reached out for him and when her hand touched the glass it passed right through it, as if it was water. She stabbed him in the chest with one finger and there was a bright flash of light.
Alex’s hair started to grow until it matched hers. He shrank a little and his clothes didn’t fit him anymore. His arms and legs grew more slender. His butt and hips expanded and two small breasts formed on his chest. He felt a stabbing pain in his lower parts and, without having to look for it, she knew it was gone. As the final step her clothes adjusted their size, to match her new body.
“Why did you do that?” Alexa screamed at the mirror girl. “Change me back” she demanded. The girl in the mirror smiled “why should I do that? Deep inside you, you know that this is your true form.” “I … I guess you are right.” Alexa said. “Don’t be so sad. You know, being a girl has great advantages. For example these guys that bullied you this morning won’t do that again, on the contrary actually. They will try to make you feel comfortable, so you’ll go onto a date with them” she giggled. “How do you know what happened this morning?” Alexa asked “I thought you were locked up in this mirror?” “No silly. I am not locked up here. I am you remember? So of course I know what happened today.” She smiled at Alexa. “If you ever feel lonely in the future, I’ll be here waiting for you, although it’s highly unlikely that that will happen.” She waved goodbye and vanished.
The next morning, when the librarian opened the door, he found Alexa sitting next to the door. “Oh I’m sorry. I didn’t know there was still someone inside, when I locked the door yesterday.” “It’s ok” Alexa said and smiled. “Are you alright?” The librarian asked. “Yes I am. I’m just a little confused at the moment. You know I just moved here and don’t know anything here. I was pretty scared when I found out that the door was locked.” Alexa replied. “Where were you anyway?” The librarian asked “I’m sure I checked through the whole library yesterday.” “I was really tired after learning, so I decided to take a nap in that small broom closet over there” Alexa answered “Seems like my little nap took a whole lot longer than I had thought it would take.” She smiled shyly.
Over the next few days Alexa and the Librarian got to know each other better and after two weeks he proposed to her. One month later they married. Alexa was very happy with her new life. She still visits the mirror room sometimes to talk with herself.
